Video: How to quickly reinforce a small section of pipe
This demonstration video was filmed on a test rig at Sylmasta HQ to show a client how to quickly reinforce a small section of weakened pipe using AB Original Epoxy Putty and Fibreglass Tape. The repair took under 30 minutes to complete and increased the outer wall thickness of the pipeline by 10mm.
About this Pipe Repair Video
Sylmasta were asked by a client for a quick and easy method to reinforce a small section of pipework weakened by external factors like corrosion or chemical attack.
We filmed this demonstration video at Sylmasta HQ using a test rig to show how to make such a repair using AB Original Epoxy Putty and Fibreglass Tape.
AB Original was mixed by hand, formed into a disc around 5mm thick and pushed onto the pipe. Whilst the putty remained sticky and uncured, Fibreglass Tape was pressed firmly into it and cut to fit the shape of the disc with no overhang left behind.
Another 5mm thick disc of AB Original was moulded and applied over the Fibreglass Tape and first layer of epoxy putty. AB Original was then left to set. It hardened in two hours and reached maximum properties in 24 hours.
Once fully cured, the epoxy putty and Fibreglass Tape were left permanently bonded to the pipe. They increased the outer wall thickness of the pipe by 10mm, creating a chemically resistant layer protecting the original metalwork from future attack.
This repair method using epoxy putty and fibreglass tape to reinforce small areas of a weakened pipe offers a faster alternative compared with mixing and applying an epoxy paste to rebuild a pipe like Industrial Metal.
Where many metres of pipework need rebuilding such as across a pipe bridge, it is still recommended to use Industrial Metal. Kneading large quantities of epoxy putty by hand is harder work and more time-consuming than mixing and applying an epoxy paste using a spreader.
